Lifejackets
Lifejacket
A lifejacket is a vest with a collar at the neck to prevent drowning. This
turns a (unconscious) person onto his or her back so that the mouth and nose
stay above the water. Lifejackets are also available for small babies a few
months.
Buoyancy
aids
Buoyancy aids
There are also buoyancy aids, which used to be called swimming vests. Do not confuse
a lifejacket with a swimming vest. Swimming vests are not able to turn people
onto their backs. Wear a swimming vest only if you know how to swim or on
enclosed water where help is quickly available. If you take a child with
you on a boat, ensure that he or she wears a lifejacket.
There are vests available in various buoyancy categories. The vest that
you buy depends on the sort of water, what you are going to do, and what
clothing you are wearing. Buoyancy is expressed in N (Newtons). The larger
the coefficient, the more buoyancy the vest has and the better it is able
to keep your head above the water.
